Russian Railways says Siemens suspends contract on Sapsan trains
MOSCOW, Mar 22 (PRIME) -- Russian Railways has received a notification from Siemens on suspension of a contract on purchases of new Sapsan electric trains, CEO Oleg Belozyorov said on Tuesday at a session of the parliament’s upper house Federation Council.
The 1.1 billion euro contract was signed in 2019 and covered purchases and maintenance of 13 new Sapsan electric trains. Deliveries of a new batch should have started in 2022.
“We think that we will be able to launch new rolling stock until the summer… regardless of how the situation evolves. But we were notified that the contract has been currently suspended regarding purchases,” Belozyorov said.
He added that the contract on maintenance is still in force.
Russia also has enough producers of trains, including Sinara Group and its subsidiary Ural Locomotives, he said.
